The stage at Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre was Taylor Swift's blank space and boy, did she scribble all over it. Performing her Billboard chart-topping single Blank Space at the American Music Awards last night, Taylor probably won hands-down in terms of putting on a show. By show, we mean crazy faces, a chorus of men playing her 'ex-lovers', photo frames (literally), dramatic smoke and one heck of a set that took up all of the massive stage.

Although the 24-year-old was not nominated for any awards this year – she won four of her five nominations last year – she was honoured by the first ever Dick Clark Award for excellence, which was presented by soul queen Diana Ross. Succeeding Taylor as Favourite Pop/Rock Female Artist this year is Katy Perry, who also picked up the Favourite Adult Contemporary Artist and Single of the Year (for Dark Horse) awards.

Favourite Pop/Rock Male Artist was won by Sam Smith while Luke Bryan was crowned Favourite Country Male Artist. Carrie Underwood finally dethroned six-year Favourite Country Female Artist Taylor Swift by reclaiming that category since her last win in 2007.

One Direction took home three pointy trophies: Artist of the Year, Favourite Pop/Rock Group and Favourite Pop/Rock Album for Midnight Memories, beating fellow nominees Lorde and Katy Perry for the last one. Lorde was nominated for three awards last night – including Favourite Alternative Rock Artist, which Imagine Dragons won instead – but what really brought down the house was the New Zealander's radical Yellow Flicker Beat performance, which started out from inside a box the size of a small room before the box was lifted away for her to dance out.

Beyoncé and John Legend were absent from the awards, but each won Favourite Female Artist and Male Artist for Soul/R&B. Beyoncé's eponymous album earned her her first Favourite Soul/R&B Album as a solo artist.

Iggy Azalea performed a medley of Fancy and Beg For It before closing the night with a very restrained version of the controversial Booty with Jennifer Lopez. Iggy also won her first ever AMA trophies: Favourite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist and Favourite Rap/Hip-Hop Album for The New Classic.

And finally, to no one's surprise, 2013 Disney film Frozen won Top Soundtrack. Let it go, haters.
