Winona Ryder for Marc Jacobs Beauty
Winona's back! She's landed her first beauty campaign with best bud Marc Jacobs
For any girl who was a tween or teen in the 90s (that's most of us at ELLE), Winona Ryder was an epitome of cool, blasé, untouchable beauty, from that ultra-short pixie cut to her amazing features. We've missed her for loads of years, but now, her status as a beauty icon has been cemented by none other than Marc Jacobs.
Just today, he sent the beauty industry into a tizzy, announcing on his Instagram account that Winona is the new face of Marc Jacobs Beauty. The new ad image is mind-blowingly gorgeous – gone is the pixie cut, but the Reality Bites actress's flawless features, wicked winged eyeliner and polished nonchalance are, as Marc put it, on fleek.
"It is with great pride (and pleasure) that I 'leak' this image from our upcoming 2016 MARC JACOBS BEAUTY campaign," wrote Marc. "Photographed here by David Sims and styled by Katie @kegrand, it stars my dear friend (of over two and a half decades), the stunningly beautiful and extraordinarily talented, Winona Ryder."
To put things into perspective, it's been 14 years since Winona disappeared from the scene after getting arrested for shoplifting (a Marc Jacobs sweater among the items, no less), something we wish never happened, but it's apparent that her friendship with Marc stayed strong.
Marc says the inspiration behind the look is 1961's The Last Year of Marienbad, a movie that starred Delphine Seyrig, who, for him, represents a an elegant, timeless, polished cool that he believes no one other than Winona could pull off. "A brilliant mind, talent, and physical beauty like no other, I am delighted to share this image of Winona with my IG fans and followers today," added Marc.
Her hair was done by runway maestro Guido Palau, and Diane Kendal was the genius behind the makeup. She used products from their Spring 2016 collection, including a New Nudes Lipstick, Velvet Noir Mascara and Fine Liner Eye Crayon in Blacquer. We love the supremely defined, filled-in brows and that artful flick of eyeliner – so doable.
Marc hashtagged the post #4everwinona, which is exactly what Johnny Deep got tattoed on his arm when they were a couple – Winona Forever. Hear, hear.
It is with great pride (and pleasure) that I 'leak' this image from our upcoming 2016 MARC JACOBS BEAUTY campaign. Photographed here by David Sims and styled by Katie @kegrand, it stars my dear friend (of over two and a half decades), the stunningly beautiful and extraordinarily talented, Winona Ryder. Mesmerized by this image and her look- created by Diane @diane.kendal (using our fine liner eye crayon, velvet noir mascara and new nudes lipstick) and hair by Guido @guidopalau I am reminded of one of my all time favorite films: The Last Year at Marienbad. The flawless cool, elegant and timeless chic of actress Delphine Seyrig has long been a reference of mine. The force of the surreal calm, and painstaking fetishistic polish of this film and its heroine are truly 'ON FLEEK' and continues to inspire me to date. No one I know could exude the adjectives I've listed as perfectly as Winona does... She does not model the look she gets into the role- and exudes it! A brilliant mind, talent, and physical beauty like no other, I am delighted to share this image of Winona with my IG fans and followers today. I'll follow this post with a few more MJ/WR images from our past- To see more of the campaign, stay tuned! #4everwinona #marcbeauty
