We don't need to tell you how risky it is buying makeup online, especially if it's a new product you've haven't had the chance to try on yourself. Save yourself the frustration of finding that a new lipstick colour doesn't suit you by virtually trying it on first.

L'Oreal has developed Makeup Genius, an app that allows you to use your iPhone or iPad camera as a makeup mirror as you try on three hundred colour cosmetics from the French brand's virtual shelves.

With just a snapshot of your face, careful applying of your selected shades, and genius navigation of the app (which registers sixty-four facial points and a hundred facial expressions), you can try on makeup without the hassle of having to actually wipe off product of your face before applying the next one.

In June, Makeup Genius will only be launched via iTunes in France, the United States and China. Eventually, the app will be released in all countries in which L'Oréal Paris is present.
