Prabal Gurung's collection for MAC Cosmetics
The fashion designer works with the cosmetics company to create his first makeup collection
[Updated 17 November 2014] Prabal Gurung's 14-piece collection for MAC Cosmetics does not only focus on the makeup products; his genius is also in the packaging.
"I knew I wanted to create a product that would be recognised not only for its incredible quality, but also for the luxury of its packaging. I was inspired by the jewelled minaudieres of the 1920s – decadent and true collector's items," he said.
The collection includes bronzing powder, eye shadow duo in three palettes, kohl powder eye pencil, Chromagraphic pencil, lipsticks and lipglass in three shades each (Prabal names the Carmine Rouge lipstick his favourite), cream colour base and a brush. Prices range from RM88 for the eye pencils to RM268 for the brush.
Prabal Gurung x MAC hits counters in Malaysia in December (MAC Cosmetics at KLCC, Pavilion, Mid Valley, Sunway Pyramid, Alamanda and 1 Utama).
Prabal Gurung is to launch his new makeup collection, having collaborated with MAC Cosmetics. The collection, which includes bold shades of lipstick, lip glass and eye shadow, is in some ways inspired by Prabal's mother.
"Creating this line has certainly been emotional for me," Prabal said in a statement. "I think back to the beauty products on my mother's vanity that I saw growing up and how much they resonated with me. It's pretty incredible to be in a position to now be developing my own."
The packaging is inspired by photographer Nick Knight as well as artists Damien Hirst and Sylvie Fleury. "There's always a slightly subversive view to their beauty," Prabal said. "I wanted to create something really beautiful that has that little bit of edge."
As for the line itself, according to a post on Prabal Gurung's Instagram, inspiration comes from "strong, substantive women and bold colours."
Featured in the ads is model Juliana Schurig, who embodies Prabal's idea of "elegant femininity with a bite."
The Prabal Gurung x MAC collection, priced between $20 and $70 is to launch worldwide in December.
