Tried & Tested: Chanel Blue Serum
A new all-purpose serum harnesses secrets learned from the world's healthiest people
If you've never heard of the Blue Zones it's time to get woke, because they may just hold the secret to living a longer life, not to mention a more beautiful one.
What, where, how?
Blue Zones are communities where people live longer than anywhere else on earth. They include Ikaria in Greece, Sardinia in Italy, Okinawa in Japan and Nicoya in Costa Rica. People in the Blue Zones live, on average, 15 to 20 years longer than Malaysians. They have more centenerians per capita and a better quality of life too, with significantly lower rates of cancer, heart disease and dementia.
What's their secret? While Blue Zones are found in very different climates, landscapes and cultures, they have several key lifestyle factors in common. Blue Zone residents eat a largely plant-based diet with few processed foods, and mainly cook at home, often with produce they've grown themselves. They have strong social networks – real world ones, not online – which span generations. They exercise daily, usually in natural ways such as walking or working outside (many of the Blue Zones are in hilly areas). Finally, they have very little stress in their lives.
But how can the benefits of such a lifestyle be captured in a bottle?
Chanel researched the Blue Zones extensively, sending their scientists there to work and study the people. They then combined this research with other studies and came up with three key ingredients that Blue Zone residents eat or drink daily, which also have impressive skincare properties. They are green coffee from Costa Rica, lentisk (also known as mastic) from Greece and olive oil from Italy. Chanel developed unique new ways to extract the most potent parts of the ingredients and combined them in their new star beauty product, Chanel Blue Serum.
This all-rounder skincare product can be used alone or added to your existing skincare regimen. It works by invigorating the mitochondria – the energy factories of cells – to correct cell stress, and assist in protein synthesis, among other things. Clinical studies have shown exciting results for both Asian and Caucasian women between 30 and 60. All experienced significant reductions in wrinkles and pigmentation, and boosted firmness and radiance. Skin was up to 21% firmer, wrinkles and fine lines were reduced by up to 35% and skin tone was up to 38% more even. The overall effect? Women looked and therefore felt younger.
And this woman agrees. After a few weeks of twice-daily use, my skin looks and feels smoother and the usual redness around my nose and across my cheeks is reduced.
Of course, no beauty product can fully counter the effects of an unhealthy lifestyle, so if you want to not just look better but feel better and possibly live longer too, try incorporating some other habits from the Blue Zones: eat more vegetables, exercise outside, and try not to worry so much. It can't hurt.
The Chanel Blue Serum is priced at RM400 and is now available at Chanel Fragrance & Beauty boutiques and Chanel counters at leading departmental stores nationwide.
